General HOUSHMAND ALMASSI who introduced the sport of Fencing to Iran has passed away.
General Almassi devoted his life to fencing by promoting it in Iran as he founded the Iranian Fencing Federation. He spearheaded the creation of an Asian fencing organization of which he served as president in 1972 and was instrumental to having fencing included in the 1974 Asian Games held in Tehran, Iran and continued its inclusion in the succeeding 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok and the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul. The organization was however taken over by the Asian Fencing Confederation (later changed its name to the Fencing Confederation of Asia) which was formed in 1988, which is now the FIE recognized continental organization for fencing.
General Almassi was born in 1928 and passed away this year at the age of 88. He participated in the 1964 Olympic Games held in Tokyo Japan representing Iran in the sport of fencing.
The FCA joins our friend in Iran in paying tribute to the late General HOUSHMAND ALMASSI.
