HONG KONG'S CHEUNG CLINCHES GOLD AT ASIAN FENCING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hong Kong’s Cheung Ka-long claimed the men’s individual foil title on the opening day of the Asian Fencing Championships in the Chinese city of Wuxi. The 18-year-old beat Japan’s Takahiro Shikine in the final as South Korea’s Kwon Young-ho and Olympic champion Lei Sheng of China took the bronze medals.

It capped off a successful couple of days for Cheung, who yesterday secured his place at Rio 2016 with victory over Chinese Taipei’s Ou Feng-ming in the Asia-Oceania Olympic Games qualifier, which also took place in Wuxi."My target was to represent Hong Kong at the Rio Olympics and now it’s like a dream come true," Cheung told the South China Morning Post.

"It has been quite a nervous period after knowing I had to compete in the zonal qualification. "Even if I had achieved a high world ranking, I still had to prove it on the court."The other winner today was China's Sun Yujie in the women’s individual épée. The London 2012 bronze medallist was followed onto the podium by compatriot Xu Anqi. South Korea’s Kang Young-mi and Shin A-lam were the bronze medallists.
