    2013 Asian Championships In Shanghai

The 2013 Asian Championships took place from 4 to 9 June, 2013 in Shanghai, China. This year, due to internal problems in Lebanon, the Asian Confederation has decided to change the host country so that the Asian Championships are held safely for the delegations. The Chinese Fencing Federation has made every effort to support the FIE and the Asian Fencing Confederation to organize the 2013 Asian Championships in a difficult and urgent situation.

In total 24 countries and 293 fencers participated in the individual competition and 65 teams, all weapons included. This is not the historical record of participation in Asian Championships but the level keeps on rising. The first day of competition, Korea completely dominated the individual women's foil and men's saber. It won two gold medals and three of the four finalists were Korean, continuing the performance of the London Olympics. The second day of competition, XU An Qin, Chinese epeeist, gold medalist in the FIE women's epee competition in Doha, won first place in this weapon. HEO Jun, Korean fencer, won the gold medal in individual men's foil. Korea continued to occupy the top spot on the podium. On the third day, big surprise the individual men's epee, ALIMZHANOV Elmir (KAZ) won the gold medal after defeating Kim Song Min (KOR) in the semifinals and Kweon Yong Jun (KOR) in the final. This is the first time a Kazak athlete won the gold medal in individual men's epee at Asian championships. It really is a great result for the fencing of Kazakhstan. In individual women's saber, Jiyeon Kim (KOR) won the fourth gold medal for Korea in the 2013 Asian Championships. The three days of competition ended with four gold medals for Korea, a gold medal for China and a gold medal for Kazakhstan.

In team competitions, Korea remained at the top of the charts. It won four additional gold medals in women’s foil, men's saber, men's foil and women's saber. China won the gold medal in women's epee and Kazakhstan had a great victory in the men's epee.

The results of the 2013 Asian Championships show that since the London Olympics in 2012, the Korean team dominates in Asia and maintained its Empire position in Asia. This is a phenomenon that all Asian countries should properly analyze. Outside Korea, Australia managed to win a silver medal in individual women's epee, Japan a bronze medal silver medal in individual men's foil, Hong Kong in individual women's epee and Iran a bronze medal in the individual men's saber. All these countries have made great progress compared their results of previous Asian Championships. Other countries such as Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Turkmenistan, Singapore, Chinese Taipei and Thailand have also made remarkable progress. On the occasion of Asian Championships, many countries use new fencers to train a new team for the next Olympics.

The President of the Asian Confederation, Celso Dayrit, and the Vice-President of the Asian confederation, Lee Gi Kwang, attended the opening ceremony. They encouraged athletes a lot. The Technical Directory, the refereeing delegate and all referees have done a remarkable job. The organizers and volunteers helped a lot during these championships. The organization of the Asian Championships was a great success.

The 2014 Asian Championships will be held in Seoul, South Korea.
