China ruled the fencing competitions in the recently concluded 2nd Asian Youth Games held in Nanjing China on August 19 to 21, 2013. Of the six individual events contested in the Games, China won four while Japan and Hong Kong one each.
This is the first time that fencing is played in the Games organized by the Olympic Council of Asia, after the OCA took the cue from the International Olympic Committee's initiative of organizing the Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore in 2010. The first AYG was likewise hosted by Singapore in 2009, though fencing was not yet included in the programme.
FCA President Celso Dayrit and FCA Secretary General Khaled Atiyat led the officials who managed the fencing events in Nanjing. "We hope that with the inclusion of fencing in the 2nd AYG, our sport will continue to be in the programme of future AYG as competitions such as this are important for the development of fencing in Asia" Dayrit said.
A total of 132 fencers representing 26 federations in Asia participated in the competitions. Only six individual events were contested, with each federation entitled to enter a maximum of two competitors per event. Participating fencers were born between 1997 and 1999, a decision made in order to ensure that said fencers are still eligible to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games to be held also in Nanjing in August 2014.
The Gold medal winners from China are: GU Xinyuan (Men Epee), XU Qiancheng (Men Saber), ZHONG Peiying (Women Epee), and CHEN Qingyuan (Women Foil). CHEUNG Ka Long of Hong Kong won the gold medal in Men Foil, while Japanese MUKAE Ayake won the gold in Women Saber.
