MONUMENT In HONOR OF A FENCER

Probably the biggest monument built in the world, honoring a fencer (as a sportsman) was constructed in the Philippines. The 30 foot monument of DR. JOSE RIZAL which depicts him as an athlete wearing a fencing uniform and holding a fencing sword, was unveiled during the National Schools Games held in the province of Laguna (south of Manila).

JOSE RIZAL is considered in the Philippines as their National Hero. In the late 19th century, he wrote two books entitled "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Felibusterismo" which inspired the Filipino people to revolt and gain Independence from Spain. He was executed by firing squad in a public park in the city of Manila in 1896. The Philippines was colonized by Spain for more than three centuries.

Fencing is among a few sports played in all editions of the modern Olympic Games since it started in Athens Greece in 1896. Like Dr. Jose Rizal, the founder of the modern Olympic Games Baron Pierre De Coubertin, and the incumbent president of the International Olympic Committee Dr. Thomas Bach, all took up fencing as their sport. Dr. Bach on the other hand, was a fencing gold medalist in the Montreal Olympic Games
