After garnering only a total of 3 medals in the 1st YOG in Singapore courtesy of Korea (2) and China (1), Asia gave a far better performance at the recently concluded 2014 Youth Olympic Games held in Nanjing.
Winning 1 gold courtesy of Lee Sinhee (KOR) in Women’s Individual Epee; 3 silvers from Karin Miyawaki (JPN) in Women’s Individual Foil, Kim Dongu (KOR) in Men’s Individual Sabre and Choi Chun Rin Ryan (HKG) in Men’s Individual Foil; and 2 bronze medals from Huang Ali (CHN) in Women’s Individual Foil and Yan Yinghui (CHN) in Men’s Individual Sabre.
Asia capped the last day of competition with a gold medal finish in the Mixed Team Event after a very exciting and close match between Team Asia-Oceania 1 and Team Europe 1. The scores were practically tied after each bout until Choi Chun Rin Ryan, Men’s Foil fencer from Hong Kong ended the fifth bout with the biggest lead of the match at 25-21. This paved the way for Japanese Women’s Sabre fencer, Misaki Emura to close out the match with a final score of 30-26. Other members of Team Asia-Oceania 1 were Chien Kei Hsu Albert (HKG) Men’s Epee, Karin Miyawaki (JPN) Women’s Foil, Kim Dongju (KOR) Men’s Sabre and Lee Sinhee (KOR) Women’s Epee. Team Europe 2 won the bronze medal match against Team Asia-Oceania 2 with a comfortable 30-25 finish.
